The National Key Research Program focuses on micro plastics for the first time

China is the world's largest producer and consumer of plastics, and micro-plastic pollution on China's coastal ecosystems constitute is a serious threat. However, scientists know little about the status quo of micro-plastics in China's coastal marine environment and its complex behavior in marine ecosystems, lack of risk assessment. Compared with foreign countries, domestic micro-plastic-related research is still relatively sporadic, micro-plastic distribution and sources of basic facts are not clear, the public also know little about micro-plastic.

East China Normal University, the State Key Laboratory of Estuarine and Coastal Sciences Shihua Hong revealed that a marine fish from China survey shows that more than 20 kinds of high economic value of the common fish sampling, 90% of the fish samples are found in the micro plastic. For marine life, micro-plastic like the ocean PM2.5, increasingly threatening their survival safety.

In 2013, our scientists began to pay attention to marine micro-plastic pollution related research. The National Key Laboratory of Estuarine and Coastal Research of East China Normal University first carried out the study of micro-plastic pollution in the Yangtze River estuary and the East China Sea, and then studied the marine micro-plastics in the coastal coastal areas of the coastal areas of China and several estuaries in the east. The results show that the number of microficans in seawater In the sample taken to occupy more than 90%.

The results show that micro-plastics have been widely found in the estuarine and coastal waters of China, and the river input has a significant effect on the micro-plastic content of the offshore sea. There are scientific research personnel to study the lower reaches of the three Gorges Dam, the South China Sea sediment and Hong Kong beach and other areas of micro-plastic pollution status, as well as the beach micro-plastic adsorption of organic pollutants and so on.

So, in our daily life, we should pay more attention to recycling styrofoam, through this, we not only can protect the environment, but also can reuse the waste resources.
